HERD MARES

The mares listed here who have numbers came from a PMU farm in Alberta, Canada. The PMU rancher used numbers to identify them, but we gave them names. When the PMU industry experienced a dramatic cutback in 2004, tens of thousands of mares were out of work and headed to slaughter. We bought over 200 mares and brought them down to our ranch, where most of them sold. These remaining mares were kept for production of replacement stock for our resort trail ride strings.

Every mare here was rescued from either the PMU industry where they faced an end of life trip to slaughter, or are local rescues, who also faced slaughter. Many of the locally rescued horses came from auction, where we outbid the kill buyers. Some came from rescues, and others were donated when times got too tough for their owners to keep them.

Most are suitable only for broodmare use, as they are rank, lame, previously abused, or have other issues that would make them unsuitable for useful riding stock. Here, they can live out their lives on our huge rangeland where, along with acres of grass, are fed top quality hay and minerals, receive  regular health care, and produce our much-needed replacement horses. Here, they have the best life imaginable, a very natural life in large herds, pasture breed on a natural cycle, and they are happy girls. When their lives are at an end, they are humanely put down and never sent to slaughter.

We would never knowingly send any of our horses anywhere that would lead them to slaughter. We have taken mares back who were purchased by buyers who later sent them to a feedlot, meat auction, or kill buyer. As soon as we heard about it, we went to get the mares back. We never send them there ourselves, and try hard to keep them from going that direction.

JOY
Purebred, Grade Quarter Horse
Chestnut with blaze and left hind
This mare came to us without papers, but she is purebred.

"Joy" was bought at an auction when she was pregnant. After much back-tracking, we were able to locate the seller of this mare and learned her story.  It seems that when her mother's owners took her mom, they left Joy behind. Her mom was a registered Quarter Horse, so the owners tried to register Joy, but her mom died  before the DNA could be collected. Joy, although purebred, could not be registered. Because she was never broke to ride, the ranch owners decided to breed her to a registered Palomino stallion with Freckles lines, and send her to the sale, hoping someone would buy her. That someone was us!

MANGO
Quarter Horse
Chestnut Roan with star

Rescued from a feedlot while pregnant with this adorable baby, "Tropicana."  This mare came from a large herd of broodmares that were kept with a stallion and never handled much. One day they were all rounded up and taken to a feedlot to be sent to slaughter. Happily, a local rescue intervened and found homes for them instead. Mango had this foal here.

      RAVEN
BLM Mustang
Minimal White, Black Overo
2002

This is a BLM mare from Nevada's Sheldon Unit. She didn't work out for her original adopters and wound up at a local rescue. She requires finesse in handling, so she would not suit someone who wants an uncomplicated riding horse. She is a beautiful mare, great mom, and is happily living in our herd as if she were still in the wild.  We think she is lovely!

SARA
Appaloosa
Flaxen Chestnut Roan with blanket and star
2002

This mare came from a local rescue. She was unable to trust enough to be trained, so she found work here as a broodmare, where she is not pressured to be vulnerable with humans.

WYOMING
Quarter Horse
Chestnut Roan
2002

Rescued from a feedlot. She was wild and didn't respond to training. She had never been handled by humans as a youngster, and then was kept out on the range and used as a broodmare for years before winding up here.
